In the mood for a blockbuster horror thriller? | Obsession

Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston in Obsession
Since its release, Obsession, Curry Barker’s terrifying tale about getting what you think you want, became the box-office sensation of the year. In it, Bear (Michael Johnston) can’t quite figure out how to tell his co-worker, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), that he really likes her—and not just as a friend. With the help of a novelty-store trinket called “One Wish Willow,” his desire becomes a reality, turning his hoped-for romance into an unrelenting nightmare, drawing everything he loves, including his best friends, Ian (Cooper Tomlinson) and Sarah (Megan Lawless), into his terrifying fantasy. The Hollywood Reporter writes, “What makes Obsession so fun, and so disturbing, is how it takes typical aspects of dysfunctional romantic relationships to initially comic and then horrific extremes.”

In the mood for hilarious horror? | Shaun of the Dead

Nick Frost and Simon Pegg in Shaun of the Dead
Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead not only brought the zombie film back from the grave, but did so with an enormous number of brains (both real and metaphorical). When Shaun (Simon Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) find their hangovers interrupted by a zombie apocalypse, they grab their cricket bats and get busy saving the world. Collider’s Adam Chitwood names it “my favorite Halloween Movie” because Shaun “is one of those rare films that refuses to get old. No matter how many times you’ve seen it, it remains hilarious and sweet.”

In the mood for a hilarious horror spoof? | Lisa Frankenstein

Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton in Lisa Frankenstein
Directed by Zelda Williams from a script by Academy Award®-winner Diablo Cody, Lisa Frankenstein resurrects the zaniness of ‘80s horror comedies. Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), who normally finds personal interactions awkward, finds a real connection with a 19th-century corpse (Cole Sprouse) brought back to life by a freak storm. After falling hard for her recently dead beau, Lisa tries hilariously to bring him into her world. The film “is performed by a very game cast who all understand the assignment and deliver what is likely to be one of the funniest films of the year,” writes the AV Club.

In the mood for a fashionable nightmare thriller ? | Last Night in Soho

Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie in Last Night in Soho
A virtuoso of genre, Edgar Wright takes the horror film to a new neighborhood in Last Night in Soho. Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) is a young fashion student who mysteriously finds herself whisked back to the Swinging Sixties after feeling a psychic connection with an aspiring singer, Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), from that time. The fun of revisiting her favorite past era turns into a nightmare for Eloise when the seamier side of Soho takes over. Co-starring Matt Smith, Terence Stamp, and Diana Rigg (in her final role), the film keeps its terrifying secrets until the very end. Smart and scary, Last Night in Soho provides, according to The Film Stage, “an absolute rollercoaster, a Halloween fun ride down the grimy London sewers.”

In the mood for a complex psychological drama? | The Card Counter

Oscar Isaac in The Card Counter
In Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, William Tell (Oscar Isaac) plays high-stakes card games on the casino circuit as a way to deal with his traumatic past. When he tries to save a young man (Tye Sheridan) from his worst impulses, the limits of his control are tested. Co-starring Tiffany Haddish and Willem Dafoe, the film takes one into the gritty reality of professional gamblers. “In one of the year’s best films, Oscar Isaac plays a gambler who knows when to walk away,” writes The Chicago Sun-Times.
