See the Movie, Be the Character
Dress as your favorite film character for Halloween
This Halloween, trick or treat as your favorite movie character. We have characters to match your every mood and you can create all by yourself. Whether you are feeling as tough as a motorcycle rider or as quirky as a DIY robot, we’ve got you covered.
Piece By Piece
Piece By Piece, Morgan Neville’s LEGO animation documentary about the life and times of Pharrell Williams, offers endless opportunities for characters and costumes. With a little help from YouTube, you can learn how to build your own LEGO costume piece-by-piece, recreating the magic of the movie in the process. For Collider, “It’s a film that’s serious about play, and humble about the need for joy.” So, take a cue from LEGO Pharrell and create a costume that mirrors a movie that IGN says is “a dazzling and transformative sensory experience, whose medium is the message, and whose visual language yields sheer euphoria.”
Piece By Piece is now playing in select theaters, so get your tickets!
The Bikeriders
Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders—inspired by Danny Lyon's book of photographs of the same name—brings back the revved-up ‘60s world of outlaw motorcycle gangs and their entourages. Focusing on the relationship between Kathy (Jodie Comer), the dreamy biker (Austin Butler) with whom she falls in love, and the gang’s leader (Tom Hardy), the film widens its scope to capture the remarkable world around them. For ABC News, “The cool factor is off the charts.” Join the gang this Halloween. Get the right snug shirt, like this Crest Comfort Colors Pocket T, to show off your frame and a leather vest on which to sew your colors. If you don’t have a motorcycle, you can just act like you do.
Polite Society
Want to be tough, tender, glamorous, and gritty all at once? Follow the example of Ria (Priya Kansara) and Leah (Ritu Arya) in Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society. Tasked with saving her sister from a marriage from hell, Ria goes all out to rescue her and looks fabulous doing it. From stunning saris to warrior’s poses, the sisters prove to be a lethal duo. Learn how to dress for a fight from the film’s costume designer in this Focus’ exclusive interview with PC Williams. Then take on the film’s vibe. The Guardian writes, “Ria’s punk attitude is endearing, the action winking and lighthearted, and everyone seems to be having a great time.”
Shaun of the Dead
From zombie to hero, there are so many excellent costume choices from Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead. For years, people have grabbed a cricket bat, donned a bloody, short-sleeved, white dress shirt with a red clip-on tie and name tag, and become Shaun. An equal number have become Ed by putting on their “Got Wood” t-shirts, baggy shorts, and tennis shoes as they headed to the pub for a frosty pint. The characters are always in style like the movie, which, according to Collider, “refuses to get old. No matter how many times you’ve seen it, it remains hilarious and sweet…which makes it a fantastic Halloween movie.”
Brian and Charles
In Jim Archer’s comedy Brian and Charles, Brian (David Earl) is an inventor living in Wales, and Charles (Chris Hayward) is the seven-foot-tall robot with a washing machine tummy that he accidentally creates. As the two become friends, “There's an adorable, offbeat chemistry between them that you can't help but love,” writes Slash Film. You can bring that chemistry with you on Halloween by dressing up as Charles. In Focus’ exclusive interview, Chris Hayward explains how he created Charles: “I got a big cardboard box. I'm about six foot so when I put this box on, I grew an extra foot in height. I got a mannequin head and then stuck one of those sticks you use to pick up in the litter into it to move the head about.”
