Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia is a thrilling ride that will keep you guessing up to the very end. Emma Stone plays Michelle Fuller, the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company, who is kidnapped by Teddy (Jesse Plemons) and his cousin Don (Aidan Delbis), who believe she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. As captive and captors battle each other for the right to declare what is reality, the movie brilliantly reflects the giddy tension of recent history. The Independent writes, “Bugonia is one of the best films in recent memory to capture what it feels like to be alive right now.”

In the mood for a comic, coming-of-age tale? | Dìdi (弟弟)

In Dìdi (弟弟), writer-director Sean Wang brings a hilarious authenticity to the coming-of-age story of 13-year-old Chris Wang (Izaac Wang). Living with his devoted mother (Joan Chen), antagonistic older sister (Shirley Chen), and beloved grandmother (Chang Li Hua) in Fremont, California, Chris struggles to fit in, be it on MySpace or at the mall. The Observer writes, “Sean Wang's debut feature about a Taiwanese American kid growing up in the East Bay perfectly captures the emotional jumble of boyhood.” Nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards, Dìdi (弟弟) won for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.

The Austin Chronicle writes, “Come for the action and loving send-up of martial arts films, and stay for the sisterly support that shines through.”

After a mysterious car crash death, everyone in this dusty town—from a sleazy preacher (Chris Evans) to a captivating cop (Aubrey Plaza) to a not-so-sharp detective (Charlie Day)—looks a bit suspicious. The Chicago Reader writes that this sunny twist to classic film noir is “a damn good time at the movies.”

In Baltasar Kormákur’s Touch—co-written by Kormákur and the novel’s author, Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson—an older man’s desire to reclaim a romance from 50 years earlier propels him on a journey across time and continents. As Kristofer (Egil Ólafsson) leaves Iceland for England, he remembers how, as a young man (Pálmi Kormákur), he fell in love with Miko (Kôki Kimura), the woman he is now trying to find. “The film’s embrace of compassion and forgiveness for everyone is heartwarmingly spacious,” RogerEbert.com writes. “It shimmers with grace.”
