After a star-studded London premiere, Robert Eggers’ The Northman is blowing up on Twitter and elsewhere. GQ reports, “initial reactions on social media have been emphatically positive across the board, with many describing it as one of the best films of the year so far.” Tweets abound with adjectives like “daring,” “gripping,” “stunning,” and “astonishing” to describe the epic drama of a Viking prince (Alexander Skarsgård) who returns home to avenge the death of his father (Ethan Hawke). Sporting a star-studded cast (Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, and more), the film takes viewers into the eye-opening world of10th-century Vikings, a domain filled with brutal combat, gorgeous landscapes, strange sorcery, and family honor. In short a “Masterpiece,” which fellow filmmaker Edgar Wright implores audiences: “see on the biggest screen.”
