At this year’s BAFTA Award ceremony held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London, Hamnet took home two major awards. The film won Outstanding British Film, an award presented to the film’s producers: Chloé Zhao, Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes, and Maggie O’Farrell. And Jessie Buckley won Best Leading Actress. She previously won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and the Critics Choice Award for Best Actress.
In the film, Buckley plays Agnes Shakespeare, a mother who finds redemption from her own tragedy through a drama by her husband, Will (Paul Mescal). On receiving the award, the Daily Mail reports, Buckley said, “This really does belong to the women who have taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently.” After acknowledging the other nominees, she finished by thanking the author and co-screenwriter, Maggie O’Farrell: “You brought the mother out of the shadows and stood her next to that absolute giant that is Shakespeare.”
