Focus Features Acquires North American And International Rights To Dramedy WISH I WAS HERE

Posted January 21, 2014

Film is directed by Zach Braff from a screenplay he wrote with his brother, Adam; and stars Zach Braff along with Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Josh Gad, Ashley Greene, Joey King and Pierce Gagnon

Focus Features announced today that it has acquired North American and select international distribution rights to the comedy WISH I WAS HERE, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

WISH I WAS HERE is Braff's follow-up to his indie breakout hit GARDEN STATE.  WISH I WAS HERE was directed by Zach Braff from a screenplay he wrote with his brother, Adam; and stars Zach Braff along with Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Josh Gad, Ashley Greene, Joey King and Pierce Gagnon.  WISH I WAS HERE tells the story of a thirty-something man who finds himself at a major crossroads, which forces him to examine his life, his career, and his family.  WISH I WAS HERE was produced by Stacey Sher, Michael Shamberg, and Zach and Adam Braff.  Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners, Maria Cestone, Sarah E. Johnson and Hoyt David Morgan executive produced.  In addition to North America, Focus has acquired the distribution rights to film in Poland and South Africa.

“We are thrilled to be in business with Zach Braff,” said Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel.  “GARDEN STATE was a huge benchmark in the world of independent film, and we are looking forward to continuing to support Zach and his unique voice.  With WISH I WAS HERE, he has once again delivered a film that perfectly captures something essential about our lives, and presents it with the laughter and emotion we all recognize.”

“I am very excited to be partnering with Focus Features as they are one of the biggest supporters of independent film in the business.  This is the perfect collaboration for us as they recognize and appreciate how unique our journey has been to get this film made," says Braff.  “Their enthusiasm to embrace our Kickstarter backers, while we fulfill our promises and rewards, made them a natural fit.  My 46,520 backers are amazingly supportive and without them this film would not be a reality“

Braff made headlines when he announced that WISH I WAS HERE would be funded by the crowd-funding site Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a platform where backers support projects to help them come to life, in return for non-financial rewards and participation in community.

WISH I WAS HERE is the second feature film for Focus at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, following its production THE SIGNAL, which is world-premiering on Monday night, January 20th, @Midnight. Directed by Will Eubank, the latter thriller stars Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, and Laurence Fishburne.

The distribution agreement for rights to WISH I WAS HERE was negotiated by Focus Features Executive Vice President, Business Affairs Beth Lemberger; and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers and producers.

Jared Leto Takes Over (RED)’s Twitter Account Tuesday, October 29 To Bring Life-Saving Meds To People With AIDS In Sub-Saharan Africa

Posted October 29, 2013

Dallas Buyers Club Actor and Thirty Seconds To Mars Frontman to Take Part in Live Q&A at 4PM (EST) Encouraging Fans to Deliver First AIDS-free Generation since 1981

Acclaimed actor, philanthropist, and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto, is taking over (RED)’s Twitter handle tomorrow, Tuesday, October 29th, encouraging fans to help deliver the first AIDS-free Generation in over 30 years.

Leto’s (RED) twitter take-over comes just days before the November release of his new movie, Focus Features’ Dallas Buyers Club, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Craig Borten & Melisa Wallack.  Inspired by true events, the film stars Matthew McConaughey as real-life electrician and rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof.  In 1985, Ron is blindsided by being diagnosed as H.I.V.-positive and given 30 days to live.  Yet he will not, and does not, accept a death sentence.  His crash course of research reveals a lack of approved treatments and medications in the U.S., so Ron crosses the border into Mexico.  There, he learns about alternative treatments and begins smuggling them into the U.S.  An outsider to the gay community, Ron finds an unlikely ally in fellow AIDS patient Rayon (Jared Leto), a transsexual who shares Ron’s lust for life. Rayon also shares Ron’s entrepreneurial spirit: seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, they establish a “buyers club,” where HIV-positive people pay monthly dues for access to the newly acquired supplies. With a growing community of friends and clients, Ron fights for dignity, education, and acceptance.

“Since 1985, the world has made enormous progress in the fight against AIDS.  It’s no longer a death sentence.  Today, lifesaving medication exists that allows HIV patients to live normal, healthy lives, and this same medication can prevent mothers from transmitting the virus to their unborn babies by more than 95%.  Still, though, 700 babies are born with HIV every day, simply because their mothers didn’t have access to these drugs.  It’s crucial we do something to help.  Let’s be the generation that puts an end to AIDS,” says Leto.

Throughout the day, Leto will be sending out a series of tweets from (RED)’s twitter handle as well as participating in a live Q&A at 4PM (EST) with fans, inviting them to purchase the soundtrack to Dallas Buyers Club, on which his band Thirty Seconds From Mars performs “City of Angels.”  Available on Tuesday, October 29 for wide release via Relativity Music Group, proceeds from each purchase of the soundtrack will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, which provides life-saving medication on the ground in sub-Saharan Africa, where 2/3rds of today’s estimated 35 million AIDS patients live.

Adds Leto, “Dallas Buyers Club tackles the problem of HIV/AIDS patients accessing treatment. People need to know that it’s still a problem today.  Of the 35 million people living with HIV in the world, only 9.7 million have access to treatment.  It means a lot to me that (RED) has partnered with Dallas Buyers Club to offer people a way to help.”

Andrew Dosunmu To Direct Fela Kuti, Drama With Music About Musician And Activist Fela Kuti, For Focus Features

Posted September 16, 2013

Andrew Dosunmu will direct Focus Features’ drama with music Fela Kuti, which is currently in development. Focus CEO James Schamus and co-CEO Andrew Karpen made the announcement today.

A human rights activist, sexual revolutionary, and political maverick, Fela Kuti was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He was the king of Afrobeat, a fusion of jazz, funk, psychedelic rock, and Yoruba chants and rhythms. Taking on Nigeria’s rapidly changing and often corrupt government in the 1970s, Fela pushed boundaries in art and life. His legacy as a charismatic visionary continues to inspire the contemporary hip-hop world and generations of artists who believe in the power of music to transform people and cultures.

Focus executive vice president, international production Teresa Moneo is supervising Fela Kuti for president of production Jeb Brody. The Cine Mosaic production is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher and Leigh Blake.

The production’s source material is Michael Veal’s 2000 book Fela: The Life and Times of An African Musical Icon, and is not an adaptation of, or affiliated with, the Broadway musical Fela! Fela Kuti will include original music from the performer himself. Nigerian poet Chris Abani and Mr. Schamus have written the most recent drafts of the movie’s screenplay.

Mr. Dosunmu’s latest feature as director is Mother of George, starring Isaach De Bankolé and Danai Gurira; the movie world-premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews and was released theatrically by Oscilloscope this month. A native of Nigeria, Mr. Dosunmu began his career as a design assistant with Yves St. Laurent. He became a well-known photographer, and his film work started through a music video he made with Isaac Hayes. He has since directed music videos for artists including Youssou N’Dour, Aaron Neville, and Common. Mr. Dosunmu has also directed episodes of the hit South African television show Yizo Yizo. His documentary Hot Irons (1999) won the Reel Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and Best Documentary at FESPACO, Africa’s largest film festival. His acclaimed debut fiction feature, Restless City, world-premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically by Screen Media Films in 2012.

Mr. Schamus and Mr. Karpen commented, “Fela Kuti lived many lifetimes in just the one, so Fela Kuti will not be a standard biopic. The combination of Andrew Dosunmu’s insight into characters and relationships with Fela’s spectacular music will enthrall audiences around the globe.”

Music From the Motion Picture CLOSED CIRCUIT Releases Today

Posted August 27, 2013

Releasing today digitally on Back Lot Music is Music From the Motion Picture Closed Circuit. The album features 14 new cues by composer Joby Talbot (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy). Focus Features releases the movie nationwide on Wednesday, August 28th.

The international suspense thriller is a Focus Features presentation of a Working Title production, and stars Eric Bana (Hanna) and Golden Globe Award nominee Rebecca Hall. In Closed Circuit, a high-profile terrorism case unexpectedly binds together two ex-lovers (Bana and Hall) on the defense team – testing the limits of their loyalties and placing their lives in jeopardy. The movie, which also stars Julia Stiles and Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent, is directed by John Crowley (Is Anybody There?) and written by Steve Knight (Eastern Promises).

Joby Talbot’s compositional aesthetic threads through classical and concert works, projects with choreographers, and scores for television and film. In his first collaboration with Closed Circuit director John Crowley, he composed the score for the feature Is Anybody There?, starring Michael Caine.

Mr. Talbot studied composition privately with Brian Elias while attending University of London Royal Holloway and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Brian Dennis and Simon Bainbridge, respectively. On the concert platform, he has composed for major orchestras, soloists, and vocal groups. Works for large ensembles have included the trumpet concerto Desolation Wilderness, for Alison Balsom and the RLPO; Tide Harmonic, for the Orchestre National de Lille, which was a collaboration with choreographer Carolyn Carlson; and the 60-minute à cappella choral work Path of Miracles, for Nigel Short’s Tenebrae choir.

BBC Proms commissioned his madrigal The Wishing Tree, for The King’s Singers; Sneaker Wave, for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales; and an arrangement of Purcell’s Chacony in G Minor for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. As an arranger, Mr. Talbot has worked with musicians including Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Air, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Neil Hannon and The Divine Comedy (for and with whom he also wrote and performed), Travis, and Ute Lemper, as well as with record producer Nigel Godrich.

His music has attracted such choreographers as Royal Ballet resident choreographer Wayne McGregor, with whom he collaborated on Entity for Random Dance, Genus, co-written with the musician Deru, for the Paris Opera Ballet, and Chroma, for the Royal Ballet. The latter was choreographed to his original works alongside his arrangements of songs by The White Stripes from the XL Recordings album Aluminium, which he also produced. Following their work together on Fool’s Paradise for Morphoses, in 2011 he and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon premiered their full-length ballet of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for The Royal Ballet and The National Ballet of Canada.

For film and television, Mr. Talbot graduated from scoring classic silent films including Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger for the British Film Institute to writing the themes and scores for the comedy series The League of Gentlemen (for which he won a Royal Television Society Award) and Psychoville. His feature film scores include ones for John Landis’ Burke and Hare, and Garth Jennings’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Son of Rambow. He composed the score, and developed song arrangements with young musicians, for Marc Evans’ Hunky Dory, starring Minnie Driver.

Recently, he premiered works with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Netherlands Dance Theatre, and the China NCPA Orchestra. He also oversaw the returns of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Chroma, Fool’s Paradise, and Path of Miracles to houses worldwide. He is currently working with Christopher Wheeldon on a second full-length ballet for the Royal Ballet and National Ballet of Canada, as well as a one-act piece for the Dallas Opera.

From September 5 to 7, this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will host North American and international premieres of five remarkable and fiercely contemporary African short film stories – from an ambiguous, Nairobi-set science fiction story to a Cape Town recreation of the myth of Noah’s ark.
The screenings include a selection of the African Metropolis Project, showing three short films from three African directors shot in three African cities. They are set in Nairobi (Homecoming, dir.: Jim Chuchu), Abidjan (To Repel Ghosts, dir.: Philippe Lacôte) and Johannesburg (Berea, dir.: Vincent Moloi), portraying the face of a modern and cosmopolitan Africa and challenging long-standing clichés about the continent.
The African Metropolis Short Film Project is an initiative of the Goethe-Institut South Africa and South African executive producer Steven Markovitz, with support from Guaranty Trust Bank and the Hubert Bals Fund of International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Kwaku Ananse by director Akosua Adoma Owusu, brought to TIFF by Focus Features’ Africa First Program, is a spellbinding, semi-autobiographical interpretation of a traditional Ghanaian folktale. The Africa First Program is a unique initiative, with funds earmarked specifically for emerging filmmakers of African Nationality. It also sponsored Berea.
With Noye's Fludde-Unogumbe, Mark Dornford-May, Golden Bear winner at the 2005 Berlinale, sets Benjamin Britten's one-act opera in Cape Town's Khayelitsha Township, scored for African instruments and performed by members of the renowned Isango Ensemble, featuring Pauline Malefane as Noah.
Filmmakers Vincent Moloi, Jim Chuchu, Akosua Adoma Owusu and Mark Dornford-May will be present at the festival, as well as Steven Markovitz, Executive Producer of African Metropolis, Mike Downey, Executive Producer of Noye's Fludde-Unogumbe, and Mandisi Dyantyis, Isango's co-music director.
Rasha Salti, International Programmer of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), says: “To Repel Ghosts: Urban Tales from the African Continent proposes a selection of remarkable short film from Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and the Ivory Coast. We are thrilled to showcase them at this years’ TIFF, the plurality and diversity of voices will be a joy for TIFF audiences to discover. Through shaping their very own aesthetics, these five productions by emerging directors are a fascinating cinematic testimony from a continent for too long harnessed into the most moribund and derogatory prejudices.”
