WSJ Speakeasy: MOONRISE KINGDOM's Young Star Jared Gilman

Posted June 25, 2012

Jared Gilman was 12-years-old when he was cast as one of the young leads of Wes Anderson's MOONRISE KINGDOM. Now at 13, his life has changed considerably. Mariam Brillantes, for The Wall Street Journal's culture blog Speakeasy, arranged for the young star to answer questions from his tween fans. For example, fans wanted to know what it felt like when he heard he was cast:

Well, my mom was picking me up from school, mind you I'm in the school parking lot ... when my dad told me over my mom's Bluetooth, I started screaming and crying and laughing at the same time. Like I said before, I'm very contained. That's one of the few moments when I actually exploded. I just don't get very emotional that often.

LA TIMES: Steve Carell as Romantic Leading Man

Posted June 25, 2012

In this weekend's Los Angeles Times' "The Sunday Conversation: Steve Carell, romantic leading man," Irene Lacher speaks to the star of SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD about his film, his life and his status as a leading man. It's a sweet talk, with a funny aside about how his status as a romantic leading man affects his marriage to Nancy Walls (who appears in SEEKING A FRIEND as the wife that leaves him). Considering his costars -- Juliette Binoche, Julianne Moore, Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, and now Keira Knightley -- Carell confesses: "Nancy isn't threatened. She just laughs. In order to be threatened, she would have to think that I would stand a chance with any of those women."  He also speaks to what made Lorene Scafaria's apocalyptic comedy so attractive to him: "I see it as a metaphor for everyone, that we have a finite time here and you have to at some point ask yourself how you're going to live that life and to what degree you're going to live it and what aspects of it you're going to embrace and cherish. In that way, I find the movie to be very uplifting."

Go to the review to see how careful the AHA considers every scene in which animals were used. As such not only did Aleister (who plays Sorry) do a barking good job, so did his handlers.

PLAYLIST: SEEKING A FRIEND's Lorene Scafaria Inspiration

Posted June 20, 2012

120620_Playlist_Lorene

At IndieWire's The Playlist, Kevin Jagernauth speaks with writer/director Lorene Scafaria about the themes and ideas behind her apocalyptic comedy SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD. It's a fascinating look at the creative mind, especially in how one moves from depression to inspiration. At one point, she comments, "I love that there's a really loud ticking clock, and I was most excited about telling a story about two people meeting under those kinds of circumstances. I sort of liked it as a metaphor for what it's like when people break up or go through a divorce or something like that and you're sort of in that place where you're like, 'I never want to get to know someone else, I never want to hear about somebody's family' and all of that..."
