Green Your Commute with Bike Sharing
Posted December 15, 2010
Brought to you by our LA receptionist, Matt Morgan.
Green public transportation is becoming increasingly accessible thanks to companies like SmartBike. SmartBike is a point-to-point bike sharing service created in order to encourage commuters to reduce their carbon footprint. By choosing to cycle, one person alone can save 2,866 pounds of CO2 emissions per year over 6 miles. The service requires a simple registration, which grants users a card and registration code. Commuters can then use their card or code at any SmartBike docking station, and a bike will be automatically unlocked. The bike can be easily returned to any other docking station when finished. SmartBike is widely available in Europe, and started a Washington DC service in 2008. SmartBike is a great way to save money, stay in shape, and help the environment. For more information, visit the official SmartBike website here! Viesso, a Los Angeles- based furniture company, has as much passion for creating quality furniture as it does for environmental sustainability. Using locally sourced materials, natural products, and recycled fabrics, Viesso strives to greatly reduce its carbon footprint. Viesso is even working on a program where customers can return their old furniture for 100% recycling at no charge. Furthermore, since all of Viesso’s products are manufactured in LA, they support the local economy, and avoid overseas shipment. To read more about Viesso and its green initiatives, click here! The Green Effects of Bike Riding
Posted December 01, 2010
Ride your bike to work day may not be until June 20th, but it’s important to consistently think about the environmental effects of bike riding. Consider this: sitting in traffic each year wastes 2.3 billion gallons of gas, and 25% of carbon emissions come from vehicle exhaust pipes. Opting to ride a bike can lower these figures, while also providing a great outlet for exercise. From a monetary perspective, a decent bicycle can cost around $300-$600, while the average cost of a new car in the U.S. is $28,400, plus basic maintenance, insurance, and gas prices. Click here to calculate how much it really costs you to drive, and compare that to the one-time payment of a bicycle. You’ll discover it truly pays to go green.
