Reykjavik International Film Festival #1
Posted October 06, 2008

I'm in Reykjavik for the film festival and more specifically the Sound on Sight segment of the festival, which as well as screening a number of music documentaries is hosting a conference and market. I arrived yesterday to a very bright, very cold Iceland. Only having a rough idea of the Sight on Sound programme, I spent a little time getting my bearings and doing a tour of the festival venues.
Then it was off to a dinner for the Sound on Sight participants. I always find these events rather daunting (networking does not come naturally), but it was all very relaxed and I met some very interesting people. As the meal progressed, the snow descended on Iceland (the first snow this winter) and by the time I left, there was a thick layer of snow.
Today was an early coach trip to the Blue Lagoon where we spent the morning watching presentations of the selected projects for the Sound on Sight market. I was particularly interested in a couple of the docs, one about Chicago and post-rock, the other an exploration of Icelandic music from the eyes of 2 musicians who travel to the country to find inspiration.
Now I'm off to a screening of the first film made in Iceland back in 1920, Sons of the Soil, with a live score by Hjaltalin.
And tomorrow I hope to catch a couple of films in the festival, particularly Cat Dancers.
