Slide 5: Christmas Evil (1980)

First released under the title You Better Watch Out and also known as Terror in Toyland, Christmas Evil was recently given the stamp of approval from the king of bad taste, John Waters, who calls it “greatest Christmas movie ever made.” Waters is, of course, far from a sentimentalist so this is predictably far from a schmaltz fest: Harry (Brandon Maggart), an oddball toy maker traumatized by seeing Santa groping his mom as a kid, becomes obsessed with Christmas and who is being naughty and nice. One holiday season, he snaps and on Christmas Eve dresses up as Santa, delivers toys to the good kids and kills those individuals who have ended up on his "naughty" list. Rather than going down the usual slasher flick route, Christmas Evil sets itself apart from other killer Santa movies of the era with its dark sense of humor and the fact that it presents Harry as an actual character rather than just a one-dimensional whackjob.
