San Francisco | City By the Bay
Originally a settlement of the Ohlone people, the land on which San Francisco now stands was claimed by the Spanish in the late 18th Century and became the site of the Presidio of San Francisco, which was established by the Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza. After gaining independence from Spain, it became part of Mexico and expanded to become a town (now called Yerba Buena) which was in turn claimed by Commodore John D. Sloat as part of California during the Mexican-American War in 1846. When the Gold Rush hit three years later in 1849, the population of the now-renamed San Francisco ballooned from 1,000 to 25,000 in just a year and by the end of the 19th Century, San Francisco was well-established as an affluent major city.
