Focus World Acquires U.S. Rights for THE DEEP, Iceland's Oscar Submission
Focus World has picked up for the U.S. distribution of THE DEEP, celebrated Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur's powerful drama about a real-life event in 1984 in which the will to live of downed fishing boat's survivor made him a national hero. THE DEEP will be released in the first half of 2013. The film was selected as Iceland's official submission for the 2013 Academy Awards, in the Best Foreign-Language Film category, and has screened to popular acclaim at festivals, like Toronto International and Mill Valley festivals, after proving a box-office hit at home.
Baltasar Kormákur, who most recently directed the #1 box-office hit Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg, has long been one of Iceland's most esteemed filmmakers, directing such critically acclaimed movie as Reykjavik 101, The Sea, and Jar City. Next summer, Universal will release Kormákur's 2 Guns, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg.
