Ever find yourself reaching for condiments and produce towards the back wall of your fridge only to discover that they have expired? You may be the victim of an overstuffed refrigerator. TreeHugger.com refers to refrigerators as “expensive air conditioned parking lots for compost and condiments.” They recently featured Kris De Decker of No Tech Magazine spotlighted Korean artist Jhyun Ryou, who has made the effort to design more energy wise and efficient ways to keep food fresh without using the constant electricity that powers a refrigerator.
Examples such as storing raw vegetables like carrots and other roots upright in wooden wall-mounted shelves filled with sand may be old fashioned but still work today. Positioning certain veggies vertically allows them to conserve energy and stay fresher longer. Additionally, the sand maintains the right amount of humidity they need. Well, not literally. This Valentine's Day, instead of your typical boxed chocolates or bouquet of roses, consider unique and memorable eco-friendly gifts for your sweetheart!
According to The Huffington Post, there are several practical earth-friendly gifts to give on this day of love. A personal favorite is the Natural Resources Defense Council's Valentine’s Day collection of e-cards that donates its proceeds to endangered animals or their habitats.
