This is the top of my list for both 'hotel movie' or any kind of movie. I would have loved to have checked into this grand old European spa––and to have been served a glass of spa water by Claudia Cardinale!

Stardust Memories

A perfect movie––with the most incredible bit roles and extra casting ever achieved on film. The hotel and festival have charming echoes from the past--but also we feel a sadness too. Such a smart and hilarious picture.

The Shining

Kind of an obvious one. The scale and emptiness are chilling. What more is there to be said?

Life Without Zoe

This takes place in the Sherry Netherlands, which I have a special affection for since we often stayed in this hotel. Jimmy Keane--the real elevator man--plays the elevator man, and Giancarlo Giannini is one of my all time favorite actors. Beautiful photography by Vittorio Storaro.

Roman Coppola is one of the producers of Somewhere. He began his directing career with visual effects direction and second-unit direction on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He made his directing debut in 2001 with C.Q. He has lent his talents as second-unit director to, among other films, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, and Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He was a producer and co-writer on Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited. In addition, he is the founder and owner of The Directors Bureau (TDB), a founding partner of the Photobubble Company, and president of the pioneering San Francisco-based film company American Zoetrope. A full bio can be read here.
