Graphic Designers Showcase the Films That Influence Their Sense of Design

Clueless

Clueless

Clueless taught me that even though I am wildly popular, I could still be a sweet person. Clueless is superbly written, and still hilariously funny. When I rented it at the age of 12, I watched it seven times before returning it to the video store three days later. It is important for you to know that I am indeed extremely popular.

Death Becomes Her

Death Becomes Her

Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Isabella Rossellini –– enough said. Well a little more. It was visually stunning and taught me that beauty is on the outside. A perfect lesson for a designer like me. Who cares! Let's just make things gorgeous!

Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead

Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead

This classis American film taught me what it means to be a versatile designer. Sue Ellen Crandall played by the effervescent Christina Applegate, ends up working at a uniform manufacturing company about to go under. But she overcomes by coming up with creative solutions for the drab wear. No matter who the client is, you can always make something rad. Plus I will never forget that fashion show. The design transformation of the Crandall's home is incredible. And with fashion commentary like this, you can imagine the visual feast! "Nicole is wearing a form fitting nurses' uniform with mini hemline. Sure to speed up any boys pulse. The black diamonds on Nicole's cap and dress are hand airbrushed on fushia spandex. Her pink high top sneakers are laced up her tangerine tights, and of course no nurse could be complete without her stethoscope necklace."

Heathers

Heathers

Bitchy girls in high school! Sign me up! This movie had a great sense of color. With each Heather having their signature hue. Winona Ryder is a design masterpiece. What an aesthetic!

Paris is Burning

Paris is Burning

This film filled me with a sense of the dramatic. Letting go of what anyone thinks of you and working it. I definitely like working with drama in my work. It also showed me that the movement of the body is design in itself. Plus it taught me words like Xtravaganza!
